TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — During their time at work, firefighters are constantly presented with high pressure, emergency situations, but sometimes that happens when they’re off duty as well.
Terre Haute resident Jasmine Mix was nearing the due date of her second child. She had a doctors appointment scheduled for August 4th to set her induction date, but she went over to her parents house because she was already having contractions. Around 5 o’clock that evening, her water broke.
“The contractions went from 0 to 100 in the blink of an eye”, Mix said. “We were actually walking to the car and as I was getting in the car, I just had the urge to push. The next thing I know her head was out.”
Jasmine said the worst thoughts immediately came to mind.
“It scared me”, Mix said. “I didn’t know if I was pushing her out head first, if I was pushing her out breached, if the umbilical cord was going to be wrapped around her. I had no clue.”
The father, Dalton Mix, believed there was no time to wait on an ambulance.
“My husband, his initial reaction was, am I the one that is going to have to do it”, Mix said. “He was scared at first and then everyone’s adrenaline took over.”
Jasmine’s father remembered firefighter and paramedic Nathan Hyuck lived next door. He called out for him.
“I was just in my backyard doing some stuff and I heard my neighbor calling for help”, Hyuck said. “I went out there and there was a female in the front yard in active childbirth, so I decided to help.”
The 32-year-old firefighter began his career with the Terre Haute Fire Department about three years ago.
“This was actually my first childbirth, but we’ve done a lot of training with these scenarios”, Hyuck said. “I’ve been coached through it numerous times by my superiors, so I knew what to do and what to look for.”
With firefighter Hyuck providing medical treatment and a crowd including his wife, her sisters, and Jasmine’s parents looking on, a baby girl was born on the front lawn.
“I delivered the baby and my wife coached her through, with her sisters helping to pad under her to raise her off of the ground because we were in the front yard”, Hyuck said. “Once the baby came out, I stimulated the baby and cleared the airway. I got it breathing and crying, that’s what we’re looking for in a childbirth.”
Both Hyuck and Mix agree that this situation is something they never want to see again, but delivering a healthy child is something they will always cherish.
“We’ve been talking about it nonstop and just going through, like holy cow, that really happened”, Mix said. “Its been a talk. That’s something we’ll never, ever, ever forget.”
A moment that will last three lifetimes.
“Its one of the best feelings I’ve ever had”, Hyuck said.
Adaline Jaymes Mix weighed 6 pounds and 6 ounces and was 19 and 1/2 inches long at birth. Jasmine said the couple’s oldest child is very excited to have a new sister.
