VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A Veterans Day parade swept the streets of Terre Haute.
The parade had over 100 entries and spanned from 4th and Wabash all the way down to 12th Street. Marine Corps League 471 Commandant Randy Torrence says that the parade is only the beginning of a series of events honoring veterans.
“We’re just going to drive down Wabash, throw a bunch of candy out for the kids,” Torrence said. “Then, we go to the VFW there at 12th and Mulberry, and we have an Armistice Ceremony where we’ll be honoring our Grand Marshal, and he’s a 96-year-old marine, Korean War veteran.”
Parade spectator Eddy Adams says it is an easy choice for him to come out and support the veterans and their families and the sacrifices they have made over the years.
“I have family myself that served in several wars. I’ve got friends that are with me today, their families have served as well,” Adams said. “We’re here to show our support of the community and our support of veterans and it’s such a beautiful day, may God bless all of those folks and their families.”
Torrence says that the largest turnout the parade has seen means a great deal to everyone involved.
“With all the work that goes into it and all the people that come out to show their support to the veterans, it makes it all worth while,” Torrence said.
Torrence says that the turnout has grown each of the last three years, and he expects that trend to continue into the future.
