Sarah Jeanette Benson was murdered in her home in January 1981 after finding an intruder in her home.
Witnesses say they saw a white male in his early 20s, arrive in a blue four door sedan.
He alledgely proceeded to walk up to Benson’s front door and look around the property before returning to his car.
The Sullivan Co. Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police have both been investigating the case.
Clark Cottom, Sullivan Co. Sheriff, said the only thing that matters is the truth, despite the many scenarios and theories that surround Benson’s murder.
“We all have to meet our maker some day. So it’s our hope that the individual that is responsible for this would actually step forward and make things right and bring closure not only to the Benson family but to their haunted past as well,” said Cottom.
The Sullivan Co. Sheriff’s Department and ISP reexamined the evidence collected in 1981 using new technology such as fingerprint and DNA analysis.
Cottom said there’s still hope for the case to be solved.
“It’s not unheard of for cases from the 1980s or 1970s to be solved. It’s being done everyday across America. We’ve had it done here in the Wabash Valley,” said Cottom.
