VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a new scam with the caller impersonating a member of the Vincennes Police Department.
According to a Facebook Post made by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, a member of the staff received a phone call from a spoofed version of the number for the Vincennes Police Department, identifying themselves as “Officer Logan”. This “Officer Logan” then stated that a certain person in the jail needed money.
The post states that the staff member who received the call was quick to dismiss the scam, and when he called out the person on the other line, they quickly ended the call. The Sheriff’s Office said that due to the spoofed number, they couldn’t trace the call. The sheriff’s office wants to remind citizens that the sheriff’s office will never call and ask for money under any circumstances.
“Please reach out to us, we always take note of any scams that are going on that way we can stay up to date,” said Detective Cameron Carr of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. “However, our best advice is, given today’s age, they can spoof numbers and make it seem like it’s coming from a local number. Our advice is just if you don’t recognize the number, don’t answer the number and never give financial information over the phone.”
If you receive a call like this, hang up and call 812-882-7660 to contact the sheriff’s office.
