Several police officers raced to a location north of Terre Haute Thursday morning after concerns that a gun had been fired at an officer.
It started when a deputy responded to a call of a domestic dispute in the 5500 block of North Clinton Street.
Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse says when the deputy arrived, a man disappeared behind the house.
The deputy then heard what sounded like a gunshot. However, authorities later learned the suspect had put a shotgun shell in a vise grip and hit it against something to make the shell explode.
No one was hurt by the pellets. The suspect was treated for cuts after authorities say he intentionally banged his head against the cage in the back of a police vehicle.
No weapons were found at the home.
The man faces charges of domestic battery and recklessness.
His name has not been released.
