VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – As the 2023 year comes to an end, there is something we’ve all experienced this year: construction.
“I’d say we had a very successful construction season this year. We were very fortunate first of all with the weather just in that the rain was able to hold up,” Blake Dollier, Public Relations Director for the Indiana Department of Transportation, said.
INDOT has started and finished multiple projects this year, including the Clear Creek Welcome Center.
This is somewhere you can expect work to continue in 2024.
“We also did a lot of work on I-70. That’s something that we’ve seen a lot this year that’s went really well. Our bridge project on I-70 over US-41 did end up taking a little bit of extra time but it was one of those that we did just want to make sure that it was done properly,” Dollier said.
That was not the only bridge that INDOT worked on this year.
Darwin Road, the bridge over I-70 at Mile Marker 3 was another big project.
“Darwin Road may not be that road that you travel to see your family through any major cities or anything but if you hop off that exit maybe want to stop in West Terre Haute and get a snack at a gas station or something like that, you’re going to notice hey, not only is this bridge open but it’s in a lot better shape than it used to be,” Dollier said.
Larry Robbins, Vigo County Highway Director, said they did quite a bit of paving in the county this year.
He said it was about 55 miles of paving with one more road to do in the spring.
A project at the top of mind for many Terre Haute drivers is Springhill Drive.
“We kind of hit a stall with some utilities. We’ve got phase one of that completed. Phase two and phase three will start again in the spring and we’ll hopefully have that done by next fall,” Robbins said.
Robbins also said they are still working on crack-sealing roads so be patient if you see crews out on local roadways.
