TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — It’s the time of year when Christmas decorations fill many homes, but in the Wilkie home there’s also a permanent display honoring members of a family rooted in patriotism.
“They’ve done what they’ve wanted to do and I’m proud of that,” said dad Robert Wilkie.
Robert and Mary Wilkie have five sons and all have served in the military. The parents didn’t serve, but their love of country and strong values influenced their
sons.
“I would argue that they did serve, because they had to deal with everything we
did, every place we went,” said oldest son Bob.
Bob is the oldest and joined the Army after high school. Today he is in the Air Force with
35 years of combined service to the nation. Brother Ron followed him into the Army and has 31 years of service.
“I just saw the Army as an opportunity to get a start in life and to me that’s what
my life has been about,” said son Ron.
Third son Jeremy served in the Army for 16 years including time as a medic in Iraq. And Toby became the 4th son to enlist and served in the Army for 6 years
“I appreciate what they did, me and all my brothers, by parents or patriots,” said son Toby.
From an early age, the youngest Scott, knew he wanted to be like his big brothers,
eventually serving 21 years in the Army. Dad Robert says one of most trying times was when Scott’s tank was hit by a bomb and then there was the car bomb that exploded at his barracks.
“During that time, I had to believe that God would protect them and we just had to
continue to support them in whatever they wanted to go,’ said mom Mary.
“When things got tough I always knew I could call them and talk to them and it
would be alright, ” said youngest son Scott.
The military dedication of this family continues with two grandsons who answered the call to duty. And that love of country started with a mom and dad who worked and provided for their
five sons, and those boys, those men are grateful.
