TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)– The holiday spirit was in the air at the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday, as Vigo County CASA hosted its annual “Whoville” event supporting families ahead of the holiday season.
Director Glenna Cheesman said it’s one of the biggest events the organization puts on each year.
“We deal with a lot of sadness throughout the year, and today, it’s all about happiness” she said. “It’s all about community, it’s all about fellowship and being with these kids and putting a smile on their face and a smile in their heart, to letting them know that the community is here for them, that’s why this is so important.”
Preparation for the event began earlier in the week, filling gift bags and setting up decorations at the fairgrounds. Over 100 volunteers were on hand, handing out Christmas presents and helping bring the holiday to life for the children.
“We have hygiene items, backpacks, toys and candy,” she said. “We have so much to give today. This room is the size of a football field and it is truly filled to the brim with love.”
The event was split into a morning session and an afternoon one. Cheesman said it’s the first time the event has been in person since 2019, and they were expecting record attendance.
“We’re expecting over 1500 to appear today,” she said. “We’re going to set a record this year. We’ve already set a record with the support we received from the Wabash Valley. They have been amazing and we’re truly, truly blessed.”
Cheesman said those who missed out on the event can still receive assistance ahead of the holidays, and they should contact their representative.
