TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Due to a continuing critical blood shortage causing issues across the nation, Union Health is hosting a multi-day blood drive.
The drive began Tuesday and will continue Wednesday, May 25, and Thursday, May 26. Union Health Public Relations representative Mandi Scott says the drive is needed to help combat the ongoing deficiency.
Joe McKanna is an infection control officer at Union and gave blood today. He says he’s been donating blood since he was 18 and it’s something he’ll continue to do. He hopes others will be inspired to give the gift of life.
“I’ve seen the need. I’ve seen the benefit of it,” McKanna said. “From children to the elderly, there’s such a demand for blood and it’s such a life-saving tool.”
The American Red Cross will be stationed in the lower level of the Medical Office Building number 8 on the campus of Union Health from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Wednesday and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.
To donate, individuals must be 16 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health. COVID-19 vaccinated individuals are able to give blood immediately following vaccination, there is no required wait time to donate.
