TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — As part of it’s second annual “Hope Week,” Maryland Community Church is making home repairs this week in Terre Haute’s 12 Points neighborhood.
For those helping in the community, this week is about working together and lending a helping hand.
“Been talking about who is my neighbor and really talking about how we can get out in our community and help our friends in Terre Haute,” Jim Pendleton, student pastor at Maryland Community Church, said. “This year we started asking people in our 12 Points neighborhood who needed help and we started knocking on doors and introduced ourselves and asked how can we help you this summer.”
Many of the volunteers taking part this week were children. For the adult leaders, getting children started early in giving back will provide dividends for them in the future.
“You’re helping but what you get back in return is just amazing and to be able to see the lord’s work though each one of these kids and to see home owners and be able to talk to them,” Heather Draxler-Alford, Hope Week team leader, said.
The children and adults will spend the entire week together from breakfast until their heads hit the pillows. Pendleton said she believes this week everyone will grow stronger in many ways.
“They are really coming together as a community spending a lot of time together and encouraging one another and growing closer together in their faith,” Pendleton said.
Hope Week leaders said homeowners have been very appreciative of the work being done.
“They have come out here and said they’d like this done. They’ve been out here,” Draxler-Alford said. “We got the privilege of seeing a bird yesterday and homeowners have been out here very grateful. Lots of text messages just saying how thankful they are.”
The church will hold a free block party from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 27 at Collett Park.
