TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Gas prices around the Wabash Valley are some of the highest they’ve been in months.
Despite how high gas prices seem, Head Petroleum Analyst at Gasbuddy, Patrick De Haan, says prices in Terre Haute are only 1 cent higher than the national average; that’s compared to the national average of $3.10.
De Haan says prices are so high right now because oil production was slowed at the beginning of the pandemic. Now the demand has returned faster than oil companies can produce it.
Illinois’ gas prices are even higher with an average of $3.31 per gallon. That’s the 11th highest in the nation. De Haan says that’s because of the state’s higher gas taxes.
“So I think we eventually will see prices go down. It’s not going to be as much as everyone’s hoping. We might be stuck with prices that are above what they would normally be potentially for the next year or two,” De Haan said.
He encourages anyone on the road this summer to consider shopping around town for the best gas prices.
