TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It’s fire prevention week across the country and local officials are reminding you to stay safe.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, on average a fire department responds to a fire somewhere in the U.S. every 24 seconds.
“Make sure you have a working smoke detector in your residence. Change the batteries. We change the clock, we change the batteries. If you have a smoke alarm that’s over 10 years old, replace it,” stated Terre Haute Fire Chief Jeff Fisher. ‘Put it in a proper place. Outside the bedrooms, inside the bathrooms and one on every floor.”
For residents who live in an apartment, Fisher reminds those who live in an apartment that it is the duty of the landlord and/or apartment complex to make sure smoke detectors are in working order.
“Protect The Precious…it’s a program where we want to make sure every residence has a working smoking alarm. This was brought on due to a triple fatality fire we had several years ago,” explain Fisher.
Fisher applauded the city of Terre Haute and Vigo County residents for doing such a good job with fire safety. If everyone in Terre Haute continues to practice good fire prevention, Fisher believes the city should be able to make it through the holiday season safe.
