TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Students in Vigo County could soon receive new opportunities to help them enter the workforce.
The school corporation held its first business education roundtable discussion on Wednesday.
It included the Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, which presented its community plan. WorkOne representatives were also there to talk about local opportunities and the soft skills employers want.
Superintendent Rob Haworth says they also got a conversation started about creating a work ethic certification. It would establish criteria seniors could meet to receive a certificate.
“That certificate can be taken to any place of work that’s participating and there’s an incentive. Maybe it’s a guarantee of an interview. Maybe it’s a signing bonus. Maybe it’s the waiving of a two week start-up period before you’re officially hired in,” says Haworth.
He says the hope is to have it rolled out for the 2020-2021 school year. Haworth says the school corporation also wants to have a discussion about creating meaningful apprenticeships.
