TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Casino Resort Foundation said it is actively working on ways for its annual fund to be used for a new high school in Vigo County.
After receiving over $4 million in funding during its first year in operation, the casino said it wanted to work with the school corporation to help fund improvements to Vigo County Schools.
The collaborative effort would include the proposed Oversight Board, Vigo County School Corporation, Vigo County Council, and other community stakeholders.
“We recognize that strong schools are the cornerstone of economic development and workforce readiness,” said the casino. “Although the Vigo County School Corporation has great students, teachers and staff, the condition of its facilities is severely outdated and no longer supports the level of education our community deserves.”
The Terre Haute Casino Foundation Secretary Kelsey Hancewicz mentioned that helping out the school corporation like this can help the community in the long run.
“The foundation sees the importance of schools in the community,” Hancewicz said. “In regard to retaining talent, keeping talent into the community, I think we can all agree that that kids are the cornerstone of our community. We just want to make sure that we give each kid the best foot forward in their education.”
This commitment could span 20 to 25 years and could total up to $100 million toward the project.
The casino also added that the purpose of this funding project is to align with the community’s goals and pillars of the community, such as the See You in Terre Haute Community Plan and the West Central Indiana Regional Plan.
