TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) —Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun and other Indiana Lawmakers are reacting to the death of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist who was killed during an appearance at Utah Valley University.
Kirk was killed by a single gunshot wound while speaking at the university. Kirk was a longtime ally of President Donald Trump and the co-founder of conservative youth organization Turning Point USA.
In a social media post, Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun urged that this type of violence “cannot be allowed in our society.”
Sakbun also highlighted the similarities between Kirk’s murder and the two democratic lawmakers in Minnesota who were shot in July.
“Earlier this year two state democratic lawmakers in Minnesota were shot at their homes. Now a conservative influencer was shot in broad daylight at a speaking event. Regardless of what you believe, every person should agree that political violence is wrong. I hope the shooter receives justice through the judicial system to the highest extent,” said Sakbun.
Indiana State Senator Jim Banks (R-Ind) echoed Sakbun by also condemning political violence.
“Charlie Kirk was one of the most influential leaders in the conservative movement. He inspired so many students with open and honest dialogue on college campuses across the country. He was a warrior and a friend,” said Senator Banks. “There is no place for political violence in the United States of America.”
Indiana Governor Mike Braun and Luitinent Governor Micah Bechwith also commented on the death of Kirk, with Beckwith saying, “Today, our nation lost one of the greatest patriots of our time,” alongside a picture of him and Kirk.
As of Thursday morning, Kirk’s shooter is still at large with federal, state and local authorities working what they called “multiple active crime scenes.”
