BLOOMFIELD, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Utilities District of Western Indiana has given a nonprofit in Bloomfield, Indiana $3,000 through a REMC grant.
The nonprofit is named Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH), which is an organization that uses its network of hunters and farmers to provide meat to local pantries. The organization was founded in 1997 to combat hunger by providing free meat to local pantries and feeding missions.
The Greene County Chapter IN-15 of the FHFH was established in the early 2000s, and encourages local hunters and farmers to provide meat from their deer and livestock. After receiving the donations, they then send the meat to their processing partners, who do the work free of charge and provide one-pound packages of ground burger that are then given to nine local pantries.
“Often, meat is the most needed, but most expensive item for food pantries and FHFH is proud to help meet this need,” said Brady Miller, Greene County Chapter IN-15 coordinator for FHFH. He continued, “The donation of just one deer can provide over 200 servings of high-quality meat to those in need. With the help of the Community Fund grant from UDWI, we can continue our mission of serving local communities by providing meat, free of charge, to those in need.”
Since the Greene County chapter was formed, they have provided over 43,000 pounds of meat to local food pantries. According to the news release, that equates to providing meat to over 172,000 meals.
As hunting season approaches, FHFH encourages local hunters to get involved with the organization by donating deer to one of its participating processors, Lighthouse Custom Meats (812-645-9637) or Bloomfield Processing (812-384-7882). For farmers looking to get involved, the organization asks them to donate livestock by contacting the chapter’s coordinator, Brady Miller, at 812-699-3444 or at greenecountyfhfh@yahoo.com. Financial donations that support the actions of the FHFH can be sent through their website, specifying the Greene County Chapter IN-15, or by contacting Miller.
