INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The unemployment rate in Indiana for the month of July was 1.6% below the national average, with over 80,000 job listings still open in Indiana as of August 1, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
The unemployment rate in Indiana for July remained unchanged from June, sitting at 3.6%, while the national average is around 4.2% for the month.
Indiana’s labor force participation rate for July has also remained unchanged from June, with 63.7% of Hoosiers aged 16 or older who are either working or actively looking for work, 1.5% lower than the national rate.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said those not in the labor force include, primarily, students, retirees and other non-working populations, such as individuals unable to work due to a disability or illness, or adults responsible for their family’s childcare needs.
Indiana’s total labor force stands around 3.4 million.
During July, private employment rose by 7,000 compared to the previous month, with the total coming out to 2,855,200.

- Private Educational & Health Services (+4,900)
- Trade, Transportation & Utilities (+1,700)
- Construction (+1,300)
- Professional & Business Services (+1,200)
- Manufacturing (+100)
As of August 1, there were also 88,506 open job postings through the state, and by the end of last week (August 3 through August 2), Indiana had 20,507 continued unemployment insurance claims.
