TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — It was a very busy weekend here in Vigo County, as it was Indiana State’s homecoming game.
With the increase in people around Terre Haute, we spoke to the Terre Haute Police Department to see how public safety was this weekend. According to Lieutenant Justin Sears, both the Terre Haute and ISU police departments began preparations for homecoming months in advance.
This means various meetings about where to station police for maximum safety and following their new initiative, Safe Neighborhoods & Property Crime Initiative. The initiative is a larger police presence downtown and Sears said this kept students, families, and visitors safe.
He said this weekend was a success for public safety, as there was no concerning rise in incidents or arrests, beyond a typical weekend.
“Working with the city, working with ISU, working with ISU Police Department, all the planning that went into it. That’s truly what made it a great event,” said Sears.
We also spoke with ISU Police Sargent Jackquelyn Smith, who stated,” The proactive planning and partnerships within our community helped make it so much safer.”
Smith also noted that the Sycamore Safe Ride was used to take people back and forth from the stadium and said, ” A lot of people took advantage of this opportunity.”
