VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Vigo County will be placed under a burn ban until September 25, due to “extreme dryness,” according to a county commissioner.
In a social media post on Thursday, Vigo County Commissioner Chris Switzer announced the commissioners would be signing the ban into effect at noon.
“When vegetation, grass, and brush are extremely dry, even a small spark from burning trash, a campfire, or fireworks can ignite a fast-moving fire,” said Switzer. “These fires can threaten homes, farmland, and forests, overwhelm fire departments, and put lives at risk.”
Switzer said the commissioners will reevaluate the ban next week as rain is in the forecast.
