TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The Terre Haute Humane Society is open to all cats and dogs, but with them being at full capacity this weekend, WTWO’s Clear The Shelter efforts are desperately needed.
The Terre Haute Humane Society is home to more than 105 dogs waiting to be adopted into a new family. Normally, the shelter can only hold 75 dogs. Therefore, many are being held in places that are not normally dog pins.
“Well adopt three dogs out but we get four dogs,” said Maggie Wheeler the THHS volunteer coordinator. “So, while we are getting dogs adopted and that’s great. The problem is we’re getting as many in sometimes on the same day sometimes within a couple hours and so while it may look to the public like they’re getting a lot of adoption, so they should have room. There’s all the stuff that goes on behind the scenes.”
The Humane society has been offering special rates the whole month of August like reduced fees and cost to help elevate costs of pet adoption.
Wheeler said, “It will give some of these dogs that have been here for a while at least a chance to be seen and that’s kind of part of the goal of reducing those fees to get people to come in. There will be some special price on Saturday. I don’t know if that’ll extend through the weekend but for sure on Saturday it’ll be lower.”
Many senior dogs who have been here at the shelters have been waiting to call a new place, home.
“Maybe a third of our class classify a senior,” said Wheeler. “I mean we have some for-instance Tony; he’s six and has been here almost his entire life.
