VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— We’ve been following a deadly shooting that happened outside a liquor store earlier this week, in Vincennes.
Dylan Smith faces a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of 30-year-old Taylor Hendershot. The Vincennes Police Chief Jon Hillenbrand said they were previously in a relationship, and that Hendershot left Smith several months prior.
In light of this incident, WTWO spoke with Dirk Carnahan. He’s the Prosecuting Attorney for the 12th Judicial Circuit. Carnahan said someone in a domestic violence situation can contact law enforcement, the “victim advocate” in the prosecutor’s office, or local organizations such as Hope’s Voice.
That organization serves Knox and Daviess Counties and can be contacted at 812-899-HOPE (4673). CODA provides similar services to Clay, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion, and Vigo Counties and can be contacted at 1-800-566-CODA (2632).
“The people who do this really do care, and they really do fight, and we really do try to protect people,” Carnahan said. “We try to protect them from themselves.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can text or call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for resources and support. That number is 800-799-7233. Or you can text “begin” to 88788. The hotline is open 24/7.
