BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The Clay County YMCA is holding their summer camp for kids right now and they are making sure the kids have fun all while stay safe during these hot summer months.
The camp has several different activities for the kids to go like play games, ride bikes, walk on trails, as well as going inside to create crafts and get cool air. The camp makes sure that if the kids are outside playing games that they are doing it in the shade and during the morning hours as the heat has not reached its peak at that point.
Camp Director Amanda Ortiz will also make sure the kids are doing fun activities but also staying safe from the heat during those peak heat hours in the afternoon.
“We’ll come in and we’ll do like 30-minute rotations,” Ortiz said. “We’ve been having them do some crafts for 30 minutes and then we’ll rotate some kids out and we’ll play water balloons and play this game called drip, drip, drench. It’s like duck, duck, goose but the kids love it and then we’ll just rotate again and do some more crafts. Just kind of keep them out of the heat.”
Chloe Clark is a camp counselor and she helps make sure the kids stick to that 30-minute rotation so they don’t overheat.
“We go inside, like everything 30 minutes, if we’re outside to get a drink, use the bathroom just cool down for a second,” Clark said. “We also go in do a craft to help cool off.”
The camp is always looking for people to work these camps and help keep the kids safe from the heat while also having fun at the same time. Diane Harrison, another camp counselor, said a camp like this is worth for the kids and workers alike.
“This is a fantastic program,” Harrison said. “The kids we have so much fun with them. It’s playing, its games, it’s making friendships. It’s seeing kids they haven’t seen for a year or so maybe from last summer, so they’re reforming old relationships, old friendships. It’s a fantastic job.”
The summer camp will also do weekly field trips to local pools and water parks to help make sure the kids stay cool during the summer.
