CENTRAL ILLINOIS (WCIA) — 12-year-old Kavari Drisdell was hit and killed by a car in Decatur Sunday evening. His death comes after several roadway accidents involving children.
Last Tuesday, a 4-year-old was hit by a car near an apartment complex in Danville. On Friday, a Hoopeston child was struck while crossing the street after visiting an ice cream truck. Back in April, also in Decatur, 6-year-old Noah Edwards died after being hit while on his way to his school bus stop.
Law enforcement said as the weather gets warmer and more people head outside, drivers need to be extra vigilant of people walking, running or biking near roadways.
“Responsibility lies on both the people that use the road in their vehicles and those that ride their bikes around the roadway, “ Danville Police Deputy Chief Terry McCord said. “From a parent standpoint, I can tell you we probably weren’t letting our kids ride on the street at all at the younger age, and if we were with them, we were right there with them.”
McCord said it’s crucial that drivers keep their eyes on the road and don’t drive under the influence. In a split second, another tragedy can occur.
