TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Hundreds of local children are learning what it’s like to be a police officer.
About 400 kids are taking part in the Junior Police Academy in Vigo County. The summer camp is for children ages 10 through 12.
The kids are learning about various topics this week, including K-9’s, firearm safety, the police Special Response Team (SRT) and Indiana State Police’s bomb squad.
“I just think it’s important that the kids see a different side of us. They get to hang out with us and we have them in different squads to where they get to be with their own police officer for 4 days straight in a different light,” said Sean Trevarthan, Deputy Sheriff with the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office. “Sometimes unfortunately they don’t always get a see us in a positive way and this is a good way that we can be mentors to some of these kids.”
Numerous law enforcement agencies take part in the Junior Police Academy. Registration for the summer camp starts every April.
