CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Several local fire departments responded to a rural structure fire around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
According to Zeph Smith, Assistant Fire Chief for Center Point Volunteer Fire Department, flames and smoke were showing when they arrived on the scene.
“The fire started I believe in the back porch or the side porch, I’m not sure exactly where it started. But when we arrived on scene, there was fire and smoke coming out of the top, second-story window at the east,” Smith explained.
Smith also noted that no one was inside the structure when the fire department arrived.
Smith also said that while the fire is still officially under investigation there is speculation that the fire was caused by a heat lamp.
“We believe it was started by a heat lamp for chickens, but nothing has been confirmed and the fire is under investigation,” Smith said.
Several local fire departments responded to the scene along with Center Point including Poland, Cloverdale, Cory, Clay County, Jackson Township, and more.
