VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Vigo County School Corporation is addressing community concerns about warm air in some school buildings.
Assistant Superintendent for Student Services, Dr. Tom Balitewicz, said some schools have older cooling equipment that’s struggling in the excessive heat.
For example, the old cooling units at Terre Town Elementary and many schools were retrofitted with AC which Balitewicz said is not ideal.
He also noted that large fans have been brought into schools with struggling equipment and the old cooling systems are scheduled to be replaced.
“Student safety is our top priority. We want to make sure that students and staff are comfortable in the classroom and provide an optimal learning environment, and when the classrooms are warmer, it makes it tougher to do that but our teachers and students are working through this adversity and they’re doing a great job in the classroom,” said Balitewicz.
Balitewicz added that the school corporation started planning last week for these hot temperatures and that there are contingency plans in place for it a school’s AC were to fail.
