TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — The American Taekwondo Association Martial Arts brought in hundreds of people to Terre Haute for a Class A tournament Saturday afternoon.
These types of tournaments consist of people coming from all over the world to get champion points. The points allow these participants to be able to compete for national and international awards.
Phillip Minton is a grandmaster and founder of Minton’s Black Belt Academy and says these events hold more value than just getting the points.
“This helps people to try to be a better person. They say, ‘yes sir,’ ‘no sir,’ show respect and things like that. This is a time where respect is not always kept.”
Minton also beliefs that the self-defense skills they learn can be very beneficial.
“The teachings of this program are very important for the fact that these young men and women are able to defend themselves in situation where attackers may not expect them to be able to.”
The next ATA Class A tournament will be held in Texas next weekend.
