TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Checkmate is not just a move, it’s a statement of victory.
Babo`s Café is opening up a corner of their restaurant for chess players called Rook’s Corner. Chess is one of the oldest and most popular board games. It is played by two opponents on a checkered board with specially designed pieces of contrasting colors, commonly white and black. The objective of the game is to capture the opponent’s king.
The club is free of charge and is a great opportunity to play, and learn the game.
Jacob Gonzalez has been playing chess since Christmas and he believes it’s a great game.
“Playing chess is a very well tool because it will teach you how to, whenever you make mistakes you get to just rebuild on it,” Gonzalez said.
You can join the club on Fridays from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. All ages and skill levels are welcome.
“The people that are already here are already helping other people learn. And so it’s nice to have people like myself that use to play when I was younger to be able to come back out and play again,” Co-founder Brent Poole said.
