WEST TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — A 34-year-old Rosedale man reportedly had to be taken to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment following his arrest by West Terre Haute Police.
According to West Terre Haute Police, the incident occurred on March 3 at 1:11 a.m. on 1st Street near Maple Avenue when an officer pulled over Nathan A. Hoffman Jr.
Police said the reason for the traffic stop was due to a busted-out tail light and failure to use a turn signal. Police said Hoffman originally gave them a false name and birthdate. While attempting to place Hoffman in handcuffs, officers said the man spun around and grabbed at the officer’s vest and radio before breaking free of the officer’s hold and starting to run.
As Hoffman ran through a yard toward an alley, the officer used a stun gun on Hoffman. Police reported that Hoffman fell to the ground in a prone position.
“The male was then rolled over at which time I was able to visualize that his face was covered in blood,” the probable cause affidavit read.
Once in custody, police learned Hoffman was wanted out of Vigo County for a felon in possession of a firearm charge and his driver’s license had been suspended.
A search of Hoffman’s vehicle reportedly turned up methamphetamine and marijuana as well as paraphernalia.
An ambulance took Hoffman to Union Hospital and he was later taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of his injuries.
Police said Hoffman told them the hospital removed 13 rocks from the inside of his lip. While in the booking area of the Vigo County Jail, Police said Hoffman admitted to battering the arresting officer.
Jail records indicate Hoffman has been released as of March 6.
Publicly available court information states a Vigo County Judge found probable cause for the arrest of Hoffman, and gave the state until March 9 to file formal charges. Hoffman is due back in court for an initial hearing on March 22 at 1:30 p.m.
