TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Pediatric patients and a local hospital received a very special surprise Wednesday for the holidays thanks to a young boy’s generous heart.
11-year-old Owen Farnsworth and his grandmother Patti Farnsworth delivered totes filled with toys and teddy bears to Union Hospital’s pediatric unit.
Farnsworth dressed up as Santa Claus for the occasion and shared with WTWO how the project began.
“It all started when I heard my grandma was going to deliver presents to the pediatric unit and I decided to go along with the beard and the hat,” Owen said.
Many of the items being delivered are handmade including the totes themselves which Owen helped his grandmother sew.
“As we say with Christmas, it’s about caring and sharing, so he takes time on his weekends to come and help sew, and yes, I’m definitely proud of him,” Patti said.
Jennifer Harrah, the Nursing Care Manager of the pediatric unit at Union Hospital, says the patients are super excited to receive the gifts and are very thankful for Owen’s teddy bear project.
“It’s just another example of a generous heart, and the giving season, and putting others before himself,” Harrah said.
In addition to Owen and Patti’s efforts, numerous community members support the project through donations.
