CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – As construction season comes to close, one of the biggest projects in the season is wrapping up.
I-70 construction in Clay County is just about complete. The only step left is a final walkthrough by the Indiana Department of Transportation. INDOT Crawfordsville District Public Relations Director Megan DeLucenay said that the roads should be open.
“We started the operation, found that more things needed to be patched so that kind of delayed the process a little bit,” DeLucenay explained. “But it’s pretty much done so it should be completely open for you.”
This construction was slated to be completed back in July, but was pushed back to October due to unforeseen issues that DeLucenay referred to.
You could still experience delays near the Illinois and Indiana Stateline on I-70. Construction in that area is expected to last until 2023.
“It’s expected to last until June of 2023 so into next construction season, but that’s just one lane restriction,” DeLucenay said.
Vigo County resident Mike Auten is a frequent traveler on I-70 for his work commute. I-70 is the main route from Terre Haute to Indianapolis. With it now being clear, Auten said that this is big relief.
“You would hit construction times that would sometimes stop you for hours on it,” Auten said.
As construction season wraps up, DeLucenay said that it’s been successful with numerous projects going on in the Wabash Valley. Looking ahead to next year, despite nationwide inflation, DeLucenay said that everything looks good going into 2023.
“We have to continuously look back and say, ‘Hey, have things changed and kind of a budget for,” DeLucenay stated. “But, I think we’re in a really good place.”
