TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – INDOT plans to remove the North Clinton Street bridge over US-41 Northbound.
INDOT held a public hearing with area residents to get their input on the removal of the bridge. The bridge would be replaced by a new at-grade intersection.
This type of intersection is different for a regular four-way and is expected to reduce crashes in the area. INDOT Crawfordsville District Public Relations Director Megan DeLucenay said that the ageing North Clinton Street bridge has run its course.
“We decided that the best option is to make an at-grade intersection,” DeLucenay said. “That will make safety improvements in there as well.”
Nearby residents have said that the area around this bridge has been a trouble spot in the past. Kenny Zigler said that he’s seen and heard of numerous crashes, including fatal ones, near that bridge during his residency in the area. He said that he’s interested to hear more about what INDOT has planned.
“We want to see what’s going to happen and what their plan to do with that intersection,” Zigler said.
Zigler mentioned that he’s had close calls in that area behind the wheel. He shared experiences of seeing and having to dodge wrong way drivers under the bridge.
“They’ll be approaching cars in the northbound lane under the bridge and we’ll meet them head on and it’s happened to us a dozen times,” Zigler explained.
DeLucenay said that construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2023, and construction could be completed by the end of 2023.
Construction will take place in three different phases.
