TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – Over the last three years, 12 Points Revitalization has worked to beautify and revitalize the 12 Points area.
The group’s mission originally started as a movement to remove trash, graffiti and clean the sidewalks in the area. But what started out a modest effort has turned into a full economic development project.
12 Points Revitalization President Jennifer Mullen is at the forefront of these efforts. Mullen acknowledged that before this 12 Points experiment, she didn’t have any experience in terms of economic development.
However, committed to revitalizing the area, she and others grouped together to bring big ideas to 12 Points.
“I think it’s about aligning yourself with the people that are on the same mission as you,” Mullen said. “Thankfully in our team there’s a lot of go getters.”
Mullen assured that they’re good stewards with the money that they’ve received in their efforts. Numerous new businesses, murals, security cameras and communities events are proof of that.
Mullen said that she has her sights set on new sidewalks and more green space in the area and that there’s still plenty more opportunity for economic growth.
“The sky is the limit,” Mullen said. “I think there’s nowhere to go but up and so I’m really excited for the future.”
Planty Lane is one of the newer businesses in 12 Points. Owner Stephanie Rohrkaste heard of the revitalization efforts going on and the culture that other new business owners set and said that she wanted to be apart of that.
“I wanted to be in 12 Points because of the revitalization,” Rohrkaste said. “I want to make this part of Terre Haute a better place to be.”
Rohrkaste’s store primarily sells tropical house plants. She believed that the unique inventory would make for a great addition to 12 Points.
