VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — High school students from across the Wabash Valley visited Vincennes University Friday for “Science Fridays,” an event that gives students the opportunity to learn about science related topics and careers in STEM.
The university’s College of Science, Engineering and Mathematics is hosting a “Science Friday” every week this semester. Attendees Friday participated in several activities such as setting snack foods on fire to determine calorie count and learning about soil health and watersheds.
The students also learned how to collect fish species by using electrofishing. According to the dean in charge of the program Curt Coffman, electrofishing stuns the fish so they can be studied without being killed.
“This allows us to keep track of what species are in the stream at different locations,” Coffman said. “Also allows us to see if the water quality might be changing based on if we see species changing year after year.”
Among the schools represented at the event were students from Hutsonville and Marshall High Schools.
