TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The purchase of an ambulance by the Vigo County School Corporation is helping train students who want a career in emergency services.
Vigo County School’s EMT program, which started around 5 years ago, allows local students to become nationally certified EMT’s.
Currently, the program has 13 participants made up of students from Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, and West Vigo High School.
With the help of grant money, the school corporation was able to purchase an ambulance for this class.
Those in charge of the program say the ambulance will help students learn how to react in real-life scenarios and in confined spaces.
Jazmin Krstich, Terre Haute North student participating in the EMT program, says the ambulance will allow them to practice now, so they know what to do in the future.
“We learn better hands on. So actually having an ambulance gets our nerves out so we aren’t so scared on an ambulance when we actually go to clinicals. So I think it’ll help us really understand how it’s going to be in the future,” Krstich said.
In addition to becoming nationally certified EMT, students in this class have the chance to earn both high school and college credit.
The EMT program holds classes on Tuesday and Thursday from 5 P.M. until 9 P.M. at Terre Haute South.
Scott Dalton, Captain with the Terre Haute Fire Department and owner of Medatech, is the instructor for the class.
