TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – A social media challenge to highlight an important issue facing military personnel came to an end Monday, but the efforts to raise awareness will continue.
William Little is the coordinator of Hamilton Center’s Military Veteran Program. For the past 21 days, he has been leading community organizations and others in the 22 Pushup Challenge.
Monday was the 22nd day and he joined over 30 Hamilton Center employees and other community members to do 22 pushups.
The number 22 represents the number of veterans and military members who commit suicide everyday.
Little says he’s seen first-hand that this challenge is helping people.
“You would be surprised that just raising awareness in a simple social media-based exercise like this gets people to the point where they’re ready to ask for help when maybe they wouldn’t have before, and they tell us as much,” says Little.
September is National Suicide Prevention Month, but Little says the efforts to raise awareness and connect with others needs to continue.
