TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) Firefighters spend all year putting out flames, but Friday they brought the heat. Hundreds came out for the Terre Haute Fire Department’s Annual Chili Cook Off.
The Annual Terre Haute Firefighters Local 758 Chili Cook Off gave residents and their taste buds a tasty night out.
“It’s something that everyone knows how to make,” Terre Haute Fire Fighter Ric McKanna said. “You can spice it up. You can make it sweet. It’s something fun and that you can eat a lot of.”
Hundreds turned out to grab some chili and give back to a good cause.
All the money raised goes to buying toys for kids in the community during Christmas.
“It’s one of our biggest donations, charity events for our Christmas for the kids,” McKanna said. “We brought of over 250 kids last year.”
The event also helps raise money for protect the precious an organization that gives smoke detector to those in need.
Funds also went to the Terre Haute Soup Kitchen.
More than 20 vendors dished out their best pot of chili, and some even went off the grid making their chili with solar power.
“It’s a plant based, non-GMO, organic chili,” chili maker Philip Roberts said. “It’s a vegan chili. The chili and everything powered here with solar power.”
Countless gallons of chili, music, dancing and laughing come out of an event all to give back to the community.
If you missed out on the chili this year don’t worry, they will be back at The Meadow same time next year.
