INDIANAPOLIS — On the final day to do so, Governor Eric J. Holcomb signed the Gaming Matters bill into law Wednesday.
The law allows sports betting in Indiana and paves the way for a casino to come to Vigo County.
The legislation arrived on the governor’s desk seven days ago. Since that time, many in the Wabash Valley had been anxiously waiting to see if he would sign the bill, let it slide through without a signature
“It wasn’t one of his initiatives, so he had to spend some time to make sure it fits into what he wants to do as governor, and what the state of Indiana needs down the road,” Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said. “So, I’m not surpised at all he took time to do that.”
After signing the legislation, Gov. Holcomb offered the following statement:
“Gaming is a highly regulated industry that once had little competition, but now does from surrounding states and new technology. By modernizing our laws, this legislation will spur positive economic growth for our state and for an industry that employs over 11,000 Hoosiers. Additionally, it will bring in new revenue and create hundreds of new jobs – both permanent and in construction. I will direct the Indiana Gaming Commission to monitor for potential effects of this bill so that we can make necessary changes in future legislative sessions.”
