“Say It Ain’t So” was the 3rd single from the 1994 Weezer The Blue Album.
This song was written by lead singer Rivers Cuomo about his own family. He took out his family frustrations in this song. Cuomo’s alcoholic father left his family when he was 4 and he was worried his stepfather was going to leave too after he found a beer in the fridge when he was in high school. In this song he lashes out at his biological father.
“Say It Ain’t So” reached #7 on the Modern Rock Tracks and #51 on the Hot 100 Airplay charts. In 2008,
Rolling Stone
ranked it #72 on “The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time” and
Pitchfork
included it as #10 on the “Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.”
